God's name.
I am wondering if there are people who do not actually know the name of God (any translation). I have recently discovered that some may not know or understand, that God's name is not God. God is only a title.
RE: God's name.
On the piano, there's a God whose first name was Leopold. (See the following links and you'll see why I capitalized it.) In addition to his own work, he rearranged all the Chopin etudes to make them way harder, and in some cases, prettier too. His left hand etudes made it possible for pianists who had lost a hand in the Great War to still have a career.
If anyone wants to give credit to a god of theirs, I'm interesting in hearing tangible things that the relationship has provided for you, like the very real and tangible examples I've shared above.

RE: God's name.
Ah, there are also Odin, Thor, and Apollo. To name a few.
RE: God's name.
Harambe,
It is obvious to me, that the God I serve, whose name is Jehovah, is the creator of all things, as described in the Bible...There would be no need in any discussion with you, unless you were an interested Bible student, and I doubt that you are.
There are false gods too, some of these have set themselves up as a god, others have been made objects of worship by those who serve them.
From what I just read from you, it is clear that we have nothing to discuss, simply because never once in your postings have I seen you say that you have studied the Bible...maybe I missed it, because I had stopped reading most of what you posted...
and so anything that I have to post and anything that I could say, would only come from one that had every confidence in scripture...and after more than forty years of study...nothing you say could possibly mean very much.
In the political forum my comments were about what's going on now, and yet scripture clearly states in the last book, (Revelations) what's actually going on right now...its all there, if one cares to study.
I can also tell that you nor Lancellot, are Bible students, or you would know that there is but one true God...Both of you seem to believe that the word god is just a title, and I have no problem with that at all..
But for me the word God comes from the very first verse in the book of Genesis, where it says
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth...
it doesn't say a god, it said God created the heavens and the earth...ad that's the one and only God I will ever serve...
If you want evidence of who God is, what His name is, you'll see by reading scripture it is clear that God wants His name to be used, He wants people to know and use His name...
That's made clear, at least to me, in Isaiah chapter 42 verse 8...where God declares
I am Jehovah, That is my name.
and through out the New Testament the name Jehovah is written.
Perhaps some one will take you up on your wish for a discussion.
Just Some Thoughts
RE: God's name.
Victoria, did you know that the name for God in Genesis 1:1 is plural? It's not even the same name as your word "Jehovah", which as I already told you is a mistranslation of Yahweh.
RE: God's name.
Harambe,
This is the reason I have nothing more to say to you, if you think I would pay attention to anything you say, that's different from what I know to be Biblical, you are mistaken...Indeed, what you are saying is simply not true...I wish you well, but I'm happy as I am...Your first comment was enough for me to realize its best to just let you find someone to converse with...It's certainly not me...
Just Some Thoughts
RE: God's name.
By my first comment, are you talking about my reference to GODOWSKY? He was a Polish pianist. I was literally referring to his name, which you'd have seen if you checked out any of the links above to his beautiful work.
I asked you a question which you've avoided so far. What tangible, real thing has your God done to improve your life?
RE: God's name.
Victoria, it also sounds from your own admission that you didn't start reading the Bible until you were older than I am now. You've said a lot of shit just now, without knowing what we know or don't know, our upbringing, our motives and values. If you are here to learn, then look up Elohim and Yahweh and Jehovah, and take a good, long look. I'm not here to try to turn you into an atheist.
RE: God's name.
Since the first translation from the Vulgate by Wycliffe, the English Bible has used the word god to indicate a deity, and God to indicate the specific deity worshipped by Jews and Christians.
Arguing about the various Hebrew names in this context is not only pedantic, it's irrelevant. Pretty much every adult in the English-speaking world would be familiar with the custom, and know to whom the statement referred.
Being a person who regards all gods equally, the use of the phrase as used by Lancellot doesn't offend me personally, but why he would make a deliberate point out of repeatedly using it when someone has said it upsets them is a question only he can answer.
Personally, although we have very obvious differences with regard to some of our beliefs, I feel no compulsion to upset a nice lady like Victoria for the sake of doing so.
RE: God's name.
Further, this discussion has reminded me of one of my very favourite short stories. It is The Nine Billion Names of God, by Arthur C. Clarke. A very enjoyable read, if you haven't already come across it.
RE: God's name.
Craig, discussion of personal pronouns (especially gendered ones) used in the Bible to refer to God is entirely relevant, and for those who accept the Bible as in any way inspired by God or authoritative, it matters what the names are. You just don't care because you have no allegiance to the text.
