May the Beauty of the Monarch Butterfly live Forever!

Monarch Butterfly - Endangered?

by Walt Brown

There is a quaint little school in Gallatin Tennessee
By the name of Union Elementary
Where they made it their mission to save the Monarch
They raise Monarch Butterflies then release them in the park

Saving the Monarch is not all they do
This selfless quest is educational too
They learn the life cycle of this lovely creature
Including every facet and tiny feature

Natures incubator has now become the classroom
As the egg becomes a caterpillar then a chrysalis that mimics natures womb
Where it lies protected from environmental scourge
Until beautiful baby butterflies are allowed to emerge

They plant and grow their own milkweed
Where the butterflies lay their eggs with God's speed
This allows the above process to begin
Then this miraculous cycle occurs again

At the end of every year in the fall
These newly born Monarchs are released to natures call
As one small obedient school does it's part
While the fight against extinction births it's start

As fruition of Mr. Collins' dream saves the endangered Monarch
More than an hundred Monarchs are released each year in Tripple Creek Park
I stare in amazement as black and orange fills the skies
While I witness the miraculous beauty of over an hundred butterflies

Write about a butterfly contest entry

David Collins was a teacher at Union Elementary STEAM School with a vision that children could learn outside the traditional curriculum to include gardening, environmental knowledge, and wildlife exposure, including the cultivation of the endangered monarch butterfly. Sadly, after initiation of this dream he passed away due to cancer in 2021, but his legacy lives on through the students and faculty of Union Elementary STEAM School in Gallatin Tennessee as his vision to see the monarch butterfly no longer on the endangered species list lives on through them.

As perpetuity of Mr. Collins' Legacy, every year, students and faculty raise over one hundred Monarch butterflies which in the Fall of each year are released into the environment as Union Elementary's contribution to perpetuating the existence of the Monarch Butterfly so that they are no longer an endangered species.

The challenge of this contest was to write a beautiful poem about a butterfly and although the Monarch butterfly is a beautiful creature, equally as beautiful is the mission to preserve their existence as described above.
