Old Age Issues

Home Alone circa 2021

by Mark D. R.

Incessant banging at the door has disturbed my sleep again. For two days now, I have heard this at different times of the day.

Because I have been bed-riddened with COVID during this three-day holiday weekend, I am too tired to get to the door quickly and my throat is so sore, it is difficult to call out: "Who's there?"

On Friday afternoon (I already was not feeling OK), I told my regular daycare helper to take the weekend off to visit with her family. She will only return to my home on Tuesday morning.

On Saturday morning, I had used my cell phone to text my children that I was really feeling sick and had just tested positive for COVID. They were concerned and asked immediately if they were needed to stay with me (both live hundreds of miles away), I told them I thought I could manage, but I would check in with them again on Sunday if it became an issue.

Of course, at 95 and a widower, I wonder if it is really the Grim Reaper knocking. Typically, my visitors are infrequent. I am aware that my 'old age' dementia can sometimes cause lapses in my memory.

So should I cast aside my worries and just remember that I had actually texted Door Dash several times to deliver my weekend meals?
