My family faces yet another challenge in a challenging year
A chapter in the book I Survived
The Great Super Lice Infestation
by davisr (Rhonda)
| Background This book was designed for multiple author's to share survival stories. It seems my messed up family is the one that enters stories most often. |
Raise your hand if you've ever heard of Super Lice? Note, until recently, my hand would not have been raised. If yours is, I feel for you.
A few weeks ago, Kylie was sent home from Pre-K with head lice. No problem, each of my children had them as wee ones. I took her home, washed ridiculously nasty smelling goop in her hair, nit picked her super long hair until I was bleary-eyed. I washed all her bedding, sprayed furniture down, and locked most of her toys in the hall closet.
From this, she learned the term quarantine, and sadly parted with many of her favorite belongings. Some went into the wash with her bedding.
Afterwards, I took her on a shopping trip to get a pillow, backpack and toys. Not too many, she understood she would be getting her stuff back at some point.
The next day, she returned, triumphantly, to class sporting a new backpack and her cleaned "nap bag".
I left the school and took my husband, Wayne, to the doctor in Dallas for an appointment. He still doesn't navigate the mess that is Dallas traffic since his stroke almost a year ago.
While there, I got a call to pick up Kylie since she still had lice. I was flabbergasted! I explained to the school authorities all the trouble we had gone through. They were nice, because elementary teachers and administrators are cool that way. They explained that some lice, Super Lice, are resistant to the normal remedies. Really?? Why hadn't they told me that earlier?
Since I was way too far away to go pick her up, they put her hair back and everyone just avoided her.
As soon as I could, I took her home, ordered Super Lice treatment, re-washed everything, quarantined her new toys and backpack, and went shopping again.
Advance one week. I was in the hospital with a small bowel blockage that kept me hospitalized for 3 days. I returned home with strict instructions to stay abed for a week. I had barely gotten to the house when I recieved another call about the lice. Seriously?? Just how super is this alien being?
Taking my life and health in my hands, I got up and treated the hair of everyone in the house with new nasty goop, whether we showed signs of infestation or not. I rewashed everything I could, quarantined even more things and sprayed all furniture and carpet.

I looked online and purchased another, homeopathic, version of Super Lice treatment and saturated our hair the next day as well. For several days, I continued to spray our hair with this remedy.
On a side note, the new solution, while it smelled like tea tree oil, ended up being quite a nice haircare product for me. I plan to use it for texture and volume.
Oh, and Kylie's new, new toys went into quarantine.
One week later, I treated us all again, and probably created an extra super lice bug in the process.
I can't say for certain if the dreaded bug and its progeny are obliviated, but I've had no complaints from school and they check that baby's hair several times a day.
Yesterday, we had a grand release of her things from quarantine!! It was like Christmas.
So, any other super bugs out there?? If so, please stay away from our farm and off our baby girl!!!
