Chapter 30

Fishing with the girls.

This summer while on vacation, my husband, Brian, and I spent most of the time on my mom's farm. Our second son, Jeff, and his family live within walking distance and always have dinner with Mom. There's a small field between the houses and Jeff mows a path. He's a chef and does the cooking. At dinner, there are at least five at the table, and often nine. When we visit, there are eleven.

This particular weekend, Andrew, Katie and the girls came up from St. Louis for the day. We would be going there the following weekend.

When Andrew and his family arrived, Brian was at the pond, within walking distance of the house, fishing. Eleanor and Charlotte ran straight to the pond to see what Grandpa was doing. Andrew and Katie were in pursuit. My mom and I were slower.

Grandpa introduced the girls to fishing and they enjoyed this new sport.

The reason I shared this story with you is because Grandpa started something. As you can see from the photograph, the girls loved fishing. Andrew took them quite few times in the rivers and lakes around St. Louis.

When we did FaceTime, after their first time fishing in St. Louis, Eleanor grabbed the phone from her Daddy and said, "Grandma, Daddy took us fishing and I got a shot." She held her arm.

"Ellie, how did you get a shot from fishing?"

She pointed the phone to her arm. "See? A shot."

"Sweetheart, I don't see anything. Please explain."

Andrew took the phone. "Grandma's confused. Let me explain." He walked away from Eleanor. "Mom, a fishhook grazed her arm, and she thinks it gave her a shot."

"Oh my! How deep did it go?"

"Didn't even break the skin, but I guess it poked a little."

"Okay, let me talk with Ellie. She can share her experience with me."

We continued talking and Charlotte joined us. It was a catch and release lake, and the girls caught numerous small bluegills. Andrew had to put the worms on the fishhook and was kept busy.

The following weekend the girls also went fishing. Only this time they went to a river and the fish weren't biting as often so it wasn't as much fun.

After a while Eleanor started playing on the bank, but she still took worms from the bucket.

Eleanor covered her hand with sand and then placed a worm on top. Andrew asked, "Elli, what are you doing?"

She explained, "I'm hiding my hand." She pointed to the worm. "See the worm? When a fish comes to get the worm, I'll grab it."

"Let me know how that works for you."

It didn't work that well, but she had fun trying it.

When my mom saw the numerous photographs of the girls fishing, she laughed and asked, "Why are they fishing in dresses?"

"Mom, Katie lets the girls choose their own clothes. I'm wondering at what point she'll step in and assist."

Andrew and Katie have great jobs and make a lot of money. Katie buys the girls clothes from a secondhand store, and she lets them choose their own clothing. They've chosen some interesting things.

I hope you enjoyed reading. Unless the girls do something this weekend, I only have one more story to share, before I go to a different topic.
