A commentary on perspectives of reality.

The Illusion of a Shared Reality

by Jesse James Doty

Everyone has their own unique perspective on life.

I believe that we share the illusion that reality is the same for everyone.

It is my opinion that many different perspectives emerge over time, as we become the right types of individuals we hope others will view as unique. From early infancy to adulthood, our mind’s eye views the outside world differently.

As I have grown stronger, my perspective has changed into someone with a proclivity for high self-esteem. I’ve worked hard to get there, so I’ve progressively become a person who gets things done.

Some of us have black and white thinking, while others use their psyche in a different way to visualize a multi-colored world. There are many perspectives from which to choose. The choice is infinite.

The question becomes: who among us can say for sure what the concept of reality is? Is there one actual reality?

This is a question best left for scholars, philanthropists, and philosophers to debate.

In the meantime, I find it strangely enriching to continue discussing the subject.

Whenever I think I am the only one who believes a certain way, someone else comes along to disprove my theory.

I am no different than anyone else in thinking that it would be nice to believe in one reality. But something tells me that there is no easy fix to this quandary.

There are essentially a plurality of answers to choose from that contribute to the theories on reality and what makes it so elusive.

Life’s realism is elusive; there is no doubt, so it is important to note, we all have different perspectives on reality. A shared reality is only an illusion.

Reality is like a field of elusive butterflies with wings that dart from place to place. Each butterfly has an unequaled perspective as it lands on a variety of blossoms with no apparent reason or rhyme. The butterflies have no attachment to time, and although they fly high in the sky, their views are uniquely different.
