A Poem About A Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer

A Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer

by Harry Craft

I was once

 A Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer

The training was tough,

and I became a lot slimmer

Everyone noticed and replied

You will become a faster swimmer

There were times

When the water was very cold

And it made me shiver

There were times

When the water was deep and dark

And it made me quiver

That did not deter me

For I had a job to deliver

Another day, another rescue

Lives plucked from the sea

Sea shanties sang all

And all sang with glee

For another life

Had been set free

To live another day

That’s the rescue swimmer’s way

To be brave and bold

Jump from a helicopter

Into water deep, dark and cold

Save someone from drowning

The stories that were told

Of daring and glory

No, not a hero

I wore a uniform,

That is my story
