Assignment 5 Poetry with Meter Club

Poetic Tools

by Sugarray77

When listening to metric sound,
I seem to hear a rhythm growing,
percussion drums or mellow rounds,
the cadences of lines so flowing.

Oh, if extra sounds begin the line,
we've used a new poetic tool.
See, this anacrusis works just fine
and doesn't make me seem a fool.

I like the way that this one works
for new poetic chatter.
I'll drop a note and make it jerk,
reducing lines that matter.

Seems trochaic leads us here;
iambic notes await their turn;
mixing meter hurts my ear
and causes my poor heart to burn.

This weeks lesson taught us about four different ways to use meter in poetry.

1st Stanza = Feminine ending; 2nd Stanza = Anacrusis; 3rd Stanza = Catalexis;
4th = acephalexis (omitted the word 'it' first line and 'as' on line 3)

Feminine endings ~ extra syllable at the end of the line

Anacrusis ~ adding an extra syllable at the beginning of a line

Catalexis ~ omission of a syllable at the end of a line

Acephalexis ~ omission of a syllable at the beginning of a line
