Self-reflection is a good thing

Blind Spots

by Jim Wile

Too often you have tunnel vision. It’s a scourge of man.
You see things in an awful light, the only way you can.
The worst is to impute to me the very things YOU do
because we’re all the same, you think, so I must do them too.

But we’re all individuals; we’re not a bunch of sheep.
We don’t all hold the values and beliefs you seem to keep.
And yours is not the only way, in fact, you may be wrong.
It doesn’t make them right when your opinions are so strong.

You need to keep an open mind and use your common sense,
and don’t just blindly tag along, but use intelligence
to recognize an echo chamber, which we must beware.
Become a skeptic, don’t give in to those who gin up fear.

It’s not a good idea to be so fervent when you’re lacking
the facts that you require, for without them there’s no backing
opinions, which you’re free to hold, but hold onto them lightly
lest you are proved a fool when truths lay bare the lies held tightly.

Above all, do not hesitate—admit when it’s been found
that you were simply wrong. Avoid the urge to double down.
And have the grace to realize, I know it’s hard to see it,
that you’ve been taken in and turned into a useful idiot.
